Everything is so exciting here at Make Mine Pink. This month our woman of inspiration is Lena West the CEO & Chief Strategist at xynoMedia Technology.
Interview by Sharon of C'est Chouette.
While attending the very inspiring Country Living’s WE weekend in Chicago, many of the members of Make Mine Pink and I were lucky enough to hear Lena West speak. Affectionately known as the “geek with speak”, she spoke from her heart and off the top of her head. Lena offered knowledge at a rapid-fire pace—I was in awe. Being the Blog Diva at MMP, I thought I knew a thing or two, but having met Lena, I see that I know very little.
When, during a panel discussion, Lena made the statement “Go Ugly Early”, a moment of silence followed as we looked at each other, thinking “Did she say… YES she did!” and the entire audience of 600 women broke into applause and loud cheering. Then and there the decision was made to invite Lena to speak at Make Mine Pink’s “Getting Down to Business” Retreat.
I hope you enjoy this interview with Lena. I look forward to getting to know her better in September. I am sure you will too.
For a time it seemed every company was jumping on the blog bandwagon—are blogs still the hot spots for companies wanting to start using social media or are other areas emerging?
I’m not sure that I would use the phrase “hot spots”. It makes social media sound a bit faddish and, as a medium, it really isn’t. Social media is here to stay—it might not stay in the same form, but it’ll be around.
There are other aspects of social media that are generating increased interest from companies—like online video, widgets, and user-generated content.
At Make Mine Pink, we are small businesses, not at all like the large "Big Box" stores. Why is blogging a good fit for our companies?
That’s exactly why a company should blog—to level the playing field with the big guys and to develop the company’s voice to stand out from every other company out there.
If you consider the statistics for companies that are actively blogging, you’ll find that most are smaller companies. The big guys are still tussling with their legal and marketing departments.
Social media presents a unique opportunity for smaller companies to leverage a cost-effective, easy-to-implement marketing tactic that, when done correctly, offers high impact and returns.
The question is: why wouldn’t a small business want to start a blog?
